What’s it like to donate plasma?
Like blood donations, plasma donations save lives. But unlike blood donations, plasma donations are used to make medications for a variety of conditions — and sometimes hundreds or even thousands of donations are needed to make one vial of medication.
All donors are screened using an FDA approved health check, including questions about their current health and a review of their vital signs. Tests for protein and iron levels also are administered. After passing, donors relax in a donation bed where the process takes place. Unlike whole blood donation, plasma donation uses a sterile machine that separates the plasma from the other blood cells. The remaining blood cells are returned to the donor. Plasma donations take a bit longer than blood donations, which is why donors receive compensation for their time.
